AN EASY PROJECT (& more) FOR ANYONE!

HERE'S A QUICK, SIMPLE TECHNIQUE FOR MULTIPLE, DUPLICATE IMAGES OF DIFFERENT SIZES.

  • Print out the duplicates on a copier that creates different sizes , or use an image-editing program to make the sizes smaller or larger.
  • ANOTHER IDEA: Make every other size lighter or darker, or positive vs. negative! You could even go color vs. grayscale for every other one!
  • Trim away the white edges of each image if desired, and arrange them on a sturdy background before you adhere them.
  • MORE IDEAS: Instead of symmetrical design and formal balance like my example below, try asymmetrical, informal balance in any number of ways. Here are a couple of former posts with more finished examples: digital collage! and another.

TEA BAG PAPERS IN COLLAGE

(WINNER OF CONTEST ANNOUNCED BELOW!)

I’m a big drinker…of tea, that is! Hot, cold, all seasons. I like the big, family-size bags for making iced tea, and they are perfect for this project.
I let the used bags dry, and then I carefully take them apart. You can either discard the leaves or use them as texture by mixing them with gel medium.

Not a lovely photo, but you get the idea!

P.Guhin, art blog
Browns, golds, and greens are my color scheme.

The photo at right shows the first layers in my collage. The motif is that of trees and nature.

P.Guhin, art blog, mixed-media
It's still not finished!

Then I adhered pieces of dry teabag paper with fluid acrylic medium. Note that the papers are quite transparent and yet they achieve some veiling and unifying, an effect I was after.

In the photo below, I had added a few very dark accents with acrylic paint, to add depth and help tie everything together.

Finished mixed-media piece by P.Guhin
I also included die cut letters and stenciled in the number 3. I did a little scribbling to enliven the surface in a few places.

Last week's giveaway was won by my follower, Gigi, whose name was chosen in a fair and random drawing. My thanks to the others who participated, and please, stay with me! Gigi, kindly message me privately with your mailing address to receive your prize!

Multi-Media Experiment & a Giveaway

A MIXED-MEDIA PAINTING & PHOTOGRAPHY
As a former 60s hippie at heart, I always adored the light shows. With some fluorescent spray paints and a squeeze bottle of glow-in-the-dark paint on hand, I just had to try my hand at a mixed-media artwork requiring my black-light bulb for display purposes.

First, I sprayed a large piece of heavy cardboard with Krylon neon paints in several fluorescent colors. I encouraged some drips, too!

The pale-blue squiggles are glow-in-the-dark paint!
I had a roll of self-adhesive aluminum tape. It did have printing on it, but that turned out to be okay! Below is a shot of the tape and some shapes I cut from it.
neon, fluorescent

The flat shapes didn't adhere all that well, even though I allowed the background paint to dry first. But that, too, was ok!
Finally, at night in a dark room, with my blacklight nearby and on, I photographed the piece.

CONTEST FOR MY FOLLOWERS!

This contest is now closed, pending info from the winner!

I appreciate you and want to show my thanks by offering this blog candy to one lucky winner.  Do you like vintage clothing? The good people at ShabbyApple will award the lovely dress shown below to the follower of this blog whose name is selected at random from the comments below this posting.
All you have to do is comment here about an art doll you've made, an art piece using a garment, or anything else you think is appropriate! For instance, I would comment about how I love the old-fashioned "housedress" look or the pretty floral prints so popular now. A few days ago I posted a picture of a paper doll I made, which also seemed, umm...fitting.
Speaking of which, the winner will receive the dress in her size! Name will be announced Sunday, August 11, so you have until then to comment (once will do).
(Sorry, the company will ship this prize only to U.S. addresses.)

Thanks for considering this post!
Best of luck from Paula, the Mixed Media Manic.

This piece, with a "flying" theme, also uses bird's feathers, images, and acrylics. I incorporated fibers as well.

Finally, the collage/painting below is the most dimensional of the three, and the most textured.
I added gritty fillers to acrylic mediums, and found pieces of roadside trash with which to build up key areas.

It's a non-objective work that I sealed with matte medium.

THREE COLOR SCHEMES AND A CONTEST!

A Triadic color scheme is made up of three colors that are found an equal distance apart on the color wheel. The three primaries are a triad, as are the three secondaries. But don't stop there! In the example below, done by Geri Greenman, three intermediate colors have been used (red-orange, blue-violet, and yellow-green).

color harmony, colour, harmonious colors
Triads are equidistant on the color wheel.

Complementary color scheme, like the one below, uses the two colors that, uh, complement each other! They are pairs of colors found opposite each other on the color wheel. Below, the intermediate red-violet is complemented by yellow-green.
color harmony, tutorial, art lesson
This example of color harmony was done in gouache.

An artwork done in warm colors reminds us of fire and sunshine.

Altered Art Assemblage ! & Contest Winner Announced!

altered art, paula guhin
Antebellum, 12 x 14"
Assemblage from recycled materials
by Paula Guhin
The construction above is made from an inverted hanging basket, tiny plastic birds that were painted, and, of course, doll parts. I know some viewers will find the mis-matched arms and my treatment of this piece to be gruesome, but I made it thusly because I like the contrasts. Please feel free to leave gentle comments without unkind thoughts.

Announcing the Prize Winner of Last Week's Contest!
Daisukisan11 was the user name that was drawn at random from the comments that were left for this giveaway. If she is a follower of this blog, she is eligible for the freebie, a largish painting pictured last week. When she sends me her snail mail address, I will use the USPS to mail the artwork to her. Thanks to all who comment, and especially to my followers, whom I appreciate so very much.

A New Assemblage & A Contest Winner Announced!

My thanks to those who entered the recent art book giveaway. I appreciate it and encourage them to try again to win a future freebie. The winner, whose name was drawn fairly and randomly, is Elayne Koenigsberg!  I have shipped the book, Creating Decorative Paper, to  Elayne.

MIXED MEDIA ASSEMBLAGE FOR SHOE-LOVERS
I used a thrift shop shoe, a doll's porcelain head, and lots of costume jewelry for this piece.
There's even a little angel figure in there.  It's a great way to reuse junk and exercise your creativity.
