Modeling paste, texture paste, spackling compound, heavy gel medium--whatever you call it or whichever you use, it adds texture to your work like nobody's business!
There are many, many textural art products on the market today, often with additives and color mixed right in. Too, you can make your own unique mixtures by adding sawdust, fine gravel, and much more to a thick product. Fun!

When the paste has been freshly applied, scribble into it or press and stamp objects into it for added interest.

ReplyDeleteI've found texture products can be very useful for covering up paintings I'm unhappy with. Several months ago I did a 24x30" painting to go over my mantel. Later I decided I didn't like it. It wasn't yet varnished so I slathered a product called Flex-All, a spackling type compound from the home improvement center, across the canvas and started over. It made wonderful texture and totally concealed the original work. However, that canvas now weighs a ton! I wouldn't sell a painting textured with this stuff without disclosing that it's probably not archival, but for recycling old canvases it's great. And cheap, too: a gallon of it cost about $14. If you use it, just be sure large works are well secured so they don't fall and hurt someone!

ReplyDeleteI have used all kinds of things like caulk, joint compound, wax, various brands of molding pastes and gel mediums. I love the Golden medium with the glass beads. I want to try the Flex-All that Lynn mentioned. That's the second time this week I've seen an artist mention it. As usual, Paula, I love your collage!
